From towering “houses of the gods” to the tallest waterfall on Earth, Sophia takes readers on a whirlwind tour of Venezuela’s most extraordinary sights. Hi, everyone! Today I'll tell you about some cool places and things in Venezuela, the country I love (along with the U.S.). First, I'll tell you about Tepuyes. Tepuyes are huge "flat-topped mountains with sheer cliffs", as Google describes them. Many are found in the Gran Sabana area (Amazonian forest) in the Bolivar State.
Last but not least, "Tepui" means "house of the Gods" in the native Pemon Tribe's language, reflecting the mountain's sacred status.
Next up is the Salto Angel, or Angel Falls, waterfall. It is the tallest waterfall in the WORLD! (Guinness World Record) and running down from a heart-shaped Tepui. That's why I told you about Tepuyes first. Anyway, Angel Falls is 3,212 feet, or 979 meters tall and the inspiration for Paradise Falls, a location from the movie "Up" (Disney Pixar). If you've seen "Up", you've probably seen Paradise Falls in a scene from the movie.
Third here is the Catatumbo lightning. It's a phenomenon that happens at Lake Maracaibo. This has yet to be explained. From what I've read, lightning bolts hit Lake Maracaibo more than 1,000,000 times every year! Storm clouds from there nearly every day, too.
Last up is the Heladería Coromoto, or Coromoto Ice Cream Parlor. An ice cream shop might not sound like much, but this one stands out because it holds the Guinness World Record for the most ice cream flavors. Altogether, this ice cream parlor has 860 different types of flavors. Here, you can have avocado-flavored ice cream, hot dog ice cream, chili ice cream, garlic ice cream, beef ice cream, mushroom ice cream, and many more!
