Did you know that 7 out of every 10 breaths you take are thanks to the ocean? In this month's Sophia's Story World, our Deckside Storyteller dives into why the ocean matters — from the tiny creatures making our oxygen to the seaweed in your sushi. Grab your goggles and read on!
Hello, readers! Today I'll tell you about the ocean and why it's so important. The ocean is awesome! It's home to so many cool creatures.
First, tiny creatures that live in the ocean help create most of the oxygen we breathe in. If you take 10 deep breaths, 7/10 (seven) were thanks to the ocean. Phytoplankton (plant plankton) and algae, the "tiny creatures" I mentioned earlier, help make 60-70% of the world's oxygen. Trees help make the other 30-40%.
Second, the ocean has creatures and things that us humans can put to good use. Fish, shrimp, crabs, and lobsters are examples of animals that we can consume, or eat, that live in the ocean. And we can put plants that live in the ocean to good use, too. Ever had sushi? Sushi is sometimes wrapped in edible seaweed. And kelp, a kind of seaweed, can be harvested to help make beauty products (lipsticks, nail polish, etc.) and toothpaste, yes.
Third, there are so many types of animals that live in the ocean and are interesting to learn about. Some creatures have interesting bodies, like jellyfish. Some are endangered, like sea turtles and sharks. Others are just nice to learn about.
Well, it looks like I've finished my article now. But before I go, my resources were the books "Science Comics: Coral Reefs: Cities of the Ocean", "5,000 Awesome Facts (About Everything!)", and "My Encyclopedia of Very Important Oceans". You should read them! And now I'm finished. See you next time, my readers!
