Nine-year-old Sophia recently represented Isaac Newton in her school's Living Museum — and she came back with receipts. Did you know Newton loved the color crimson? That the apple definitely did not hit him on the head? That he invented calculus and then just... called it something else? Sophia's got the facts, and they're better than whatever you learned in school.
Hi everyone! You may have noticed that I've taken a break, but I'm back now with another new article, this time about Isaac Newton. The thing is that I'm participating in this "Living Museum" event at my school. Long story short, you get to pick a person who "put good into the world" and get to represent them on a certain day, and you get to research your person. I picked Isaac Newton, and here's most of what I presented:
Isaac Newton was born on December 25, 1642, in England, but since England used a different calendar back in Newton's time, his date of birth is sometimes given as January 4, 1643.
Newton LOVED reading AND learning!
Fun fact: He loved the color crimson, which is a deep shade of red.
Newton proved that the theories of ancient philosophers, like Aristotle, were wrong.
He once wrote "I am a friend of Plato, I am a friend of Aristotle, but Truth is my greater friend." This means that Newton was only looking for the truth.
Newton was grumpy, had a quick temper, did not have a lot of friends, was not very sociable, and never married.
Isaac Newton's major accomplishments were:
Newton invented calculus, which is a system to determine how things change over time, but he called it his "method of fluxions." The word "fluxion" means "continual change."
When Isaac saw an apple fall (the apple did NOT hit him on the head), he started to develop his theory of gravity. That was the beginning of modern physics.
Newton invented the 3 laws of motion.
He improved the telescope by putting a mirror in it so that it made an image of higher quality.
He was knighted by Queen Anne of England in 1705.
Isaac Newton has been said to be the greatest scientist who has ever lived, but it definitely wasn't for nothing!
